I have an exceptional nanny and I like to think I am an employer people would want to work for. My nanny and I have a great relationship and she loves my daughter as if she was her own. We both sit down and go over classes and activities we would think my daughter would like to go to. Some times we both want to take her, so we end up doing things together. Some people think this is odd, I feel that my daughter has attention from two people that love her. My nanny is from Israel and my daughter is fluent in Hebrew. I cannot say enough wonderful things about my nanny. I realize this is more than you asked for, but sometimes after reading your site, I feel I need to tell people that not all nannies or all employers are monsters.

New Jersey
“I used to be a nanny. I had some great positions. My last full-time position I took care of one child and made $538 a DAY. 24/5 on the books, live-in. Health and dental insurance and many more perks. I worked there 3 years. It was in New Jersey. I was a nanny for over 20 years. I now do short term positions. I am doing one in NYC in July and Aug. for a family with 1 yr old twins. I will care for ONE of the twins 24/5 and get $500 a day. I am a high end nanny and have several nanny friends that make that kind, actually more in salary.”

It would have been nice to see posters be a little more descriptive about their perks ... kind of like they were when they filled out the Xmas survey, that was fun to check out. I was shocked to see how many got paid OFF the books. That scares me ... it would seem to me that a professional Nanny would be paid ON the books. Paying off the books implies that they have something to hide ... why would they not want to pay their taxes? Are they being hired through word of mouth ... or Craigslist or something? (Or if it's an excuse because they aren't paid enough, go somewhere else). I would think one hired through an Agency has been thoroughly put through the mill and background checked ... and safer. (For the most part anyway, as I'm sure not all Agencies are 100%). Oh, and I can't wait to see how many of you "off the books" are going to attack me ... so those of you that pay your taxes should be ready for some drama.

I am shocked at the ratios of caregivers to children in some states! In Arizona it is 5 babies to one teacher?! that is crazy!!! For children one year it is 6 to 1? My God. I have a home daycare so that I can be with my daughter and I take care of two others besides her and it is plenty, even though I am allowed to have four, I choose to have three. It's more than enough!

I am an anny and paid off the books. What do I need to do to be paid on the books?

I am a nanny, paid on the books and that is the only way I will work. Granted, I do evening/weekend babysitting off the books, but that is different. I want to be paid on the books because I want to be able to report my income when I try to buy a house, car, or even apply for a credit card. Plus, the parents are losing out on a child care tax deduction when they pay a nanny off the books. Just think, the IRS would have a field day with the people on this site!
